Growing up in the city of Philadelphia, Darrick faced a number of socio-economic challenges
that could have hampered his ability to succeed; from living in the projects of North
Philadelphia to growing up in a single-parent family. In spite of his surroundings, Darrick
was able to rise above his circumstances and focus on success.
He received his education in the Philadelphia public school system, at William Dick
Elementary School, John F. McCloskey Elementary School, Morris E. Leeds Middle School, and
Germantown High School, where he graduated in 1983.
Darrick's chosen career path started in the United States Navy where he served active duty, which included a tour
in the Persian Gulf in 1984. Encouraged by a strong desire to help those less
fortunate than himself, he later went on to join the Philadelphia Police Department, serving
the North Philadelphia District. As evidence of his strong compassion, Darrick was recognized
by his superiors for his ability to effectively deal with the general public and for his
ability to maintain his composure in tense situations. In recognition of his outstanding
performance, Darrick was named "Officer Of The Month" for July 1993. Darrick's aspirations
to advance to city police commissioner were cut short when, at the age of 29, he was
stricken with a rare and fatal condition called Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome.
He died on November 25, 1993.
Darrick served his community with fervor and dedication. He sought to improve his
environment while excelling professionally. This foundation seeks to honor and keep
Darrick's passion for community service and his commitment to excellence alive.
